What brings people to counselling

You do not need a diagnosis—or a perfect explanation.

Sometimes there is one clear difficulty. At other times, life simply feels heavy, confusing or disconnected.

  • Low mood
  • Self-esteem
  • Loss and bereavement
  • Life changes
  • Relationship difficulties
  • Attachment
  • School pressures
  • Autism and ADHD
  • Feeling stuck

How it works

Counselling built around you.

Shaz combines person-centred, psychodynamic and cognitive behavioural ideas. In practice, that could mean noticing patterns, exploring earlier experiences, understanding the relationship between thoughts, feelings and actions, or simply having a reliable place to speak freely.

Sessions are collaborative. Shaz will not tell you what to do or rush you toward an answer.

Support for adults

Trauma-informed counselling, at your pace.

You may want space to explore difficult experiences, past or present, or to understand feelings and patterns that are hard to put into words. You do not need to describe your experiences as trauma to talk about what matters to you.

Shaz uses a trauma-informed approach across her work with adults, young people and children. In adult counselling, this means taking time to understand your experiences while keeping trust, choice and respect for your boundaries at the centre of the relationship.

You decide what you feel ready to share. There is no expectation to recount painful experiences in detail, and you can ask to pause, change the subject or focus on what feels most useful today.

What this means for your sessions

Building trust: time to get to know Shaz, ask questions and understand how counselling will work.

Having a voice: working together on what you would like support with and checking how the sessions feel for you.

Respecting your pace: making room for your needs and boundaries, without pressure to share more than feels manageable.

Shaz draws on continuing professional development and many hours of independent reading and research to inform this approach.

Common questions

Before your first session

What happens when I first get in touch?

Shaz will respond personally, answer practical questions and, if you wish, arrange a free 15-minute introductory call. You can then decide whether to book a session.

Is counselling confidential?

Your privacy is important. Shaz works confidentially within professional, legal and safeguarding limits and will explain these clearly at the beginning of the work.

How many sessions will I need?

There is no single answer. This depends on what you want from counselling and how the work develops. You and Shaz can review this together.

Can I have counselling online?

Online sessions are available where they are clinically and practically appropriate. Shaz can discuss whether this format suits you or your child.

Ready to ask a question?
